Spending time with Christ and His Word is the most important routine you can cultivate in life. Preferably, every day! Like Pastor Chuck Swindoll has said in Good Morning, Lord, “I’m a real believer in spending some time every day doing what’s important rather than doing what’s urgent. I’ve made that a priority in my life.”

But it’s easy to let the urgent shove aside the important, isn’t it? That’s why creating a routine of reading God’s Word requires sustained effort, discipline, and . . . help! To that end, Pastor Chuck and Insight for Living are committed to helping you in this most important life-long journey. Consistently reading through the Bible is truly a journey that is worth beginning right now if you haven’t already.

And here are just the tools you need! We are updating this page and each Bible book’s overview page. Important tools for the journey include:

  1. The Insight for Living mobile app where you can find multiple Bible-reading plans and instant access to corresponding Scripture readings using Pastor Chuck’s favorite version, the New Living Translation.
  2. Pastor Chuck’s overview articles, charts, and sermons, which you can find through the links for each Bible book below. It’s vital to get a snapshot of the book’s historical context, themes, and outline before reading through it. And don’t miss the maps!
  3. A one-year reading plan that allots five days a week to take you through the whole Bible. Each day you’ll read from the Old Testament, New Testament, and Psalms or Proverbs. On the mobile app, it’s called the “Bible Reading Guide.” Download and print your own copy.
  4. Insight for Living is excited to introduce you to our Facebook community group this year! We created this page for encouragement, to receive insightful quotes, to share what you’re learning, and to receive exclusive resources from our team along the way. Also, you might want to purchase Pastor Chuck’s Swindoll Study Bible filled with helpful insights, articles, prayers, and applications throughout. If you want to dig deep into the Scriptures, grab a copy of his book detailing his Bible-study method called Searching the Scriptures: Find the Nourishment Your Soul Needs. Learn how to observe, interpret, correlate, and apply God’s Word.

We’re excited to join you on this life-long journey!

In his sermon “An Important Interlude,” from his series God’s Masterwork, Chuck helps you transition from the Old Testament to the New Testament.

The Historical Books

The Historical Books: Chronicles of a Nation

The historical books of the Bible tell the story of the nation of Israel from its entry into the Promised Land to its return from exile. Joshua chronicles the conquest of the land and its division among the tribes. The book of Judges follows, detailing a cycle of disobedience, oppression, and deliverance. Ruth offers a story of loyalty and God’s faithfulness during the time of the judges. First Samuel describes the transition from judges to monarchy with the rise of King Saul and the anointing of David, while Second Samuel focuses on David’s reign, including both his triumphs and failures. First Kings begins with Solomon’s glorious reign and the building of the Temple before the kingdom tragically divides, and Second Kings records the history of the two divided nations, which ultimately leads to their exile due to disobedience. The books of First and Second Chronicles revisit this history from a priestly perspective, emphasizing worship and the promises made to the line of David. Finally, Ezra and Nehemiah detail the return of the Jewish people from exile to rebuild the Temple and the city walls of Jerusalem, and Esther concludes the historical narrative with the story of a young queen who saves her people from genocide, demonstrating God’s hidden but active sovereignty.

The Wisdom Books

The Wisdom Books: Reflections on Life.

The wisdom books of the Bible explore profound questions about life, suffering, and the nature of God through poetry and philosophical discourse. The book of Job grapples with the problem of suffering, telling the story of a righteous man who loses everything and debates the nature of divine justice with his friends before being restored by God. Psalms is a collection of 150 songs and prayers that express the full range of human emotions, providing a guide for personal and communal worship. Proverbs is a compilation of wise sayings that offer practical guidance for living a life of integrity, emphasizing that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of all knowledge. Ecclesiastes is a deep philosophical reflection on the meaning of life, concluding that all worldly pursuits are “vanity” and that ultimate purpose is found in fearing God and keeping His commandments. Finally, the Song of Solomon is a poetic celebration of romantic love and marriage, often interpreted as an allegory for God’s love for His people.

The Major Prophets

The Major Prophets: Voices of Warning and Vision.

The Major Prophets are a group of five books in the Old Testament: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel. They are called “major” due to the significant length and scope of their prophecies. Isaiah delivered a message of judgment for Israel’s sins but also provided powerful prophecies of a coming Messiah. Jeremiah, known as the “weeping prophet,” warned Judah of their impending destruction and exile at the hands of Babylon. Lamentations, written by Jeremiah, is a poetic expression of sorrow over the fall of Jerusalem. Ezekiel ministered to the exiles in Babylon, delivering visions of God’s glory and prophesying about the restoration of Israel. Finally, Daniel, who served in the Babylonian and Persian courts, received prophetic visions about the future of Gentile empires and the establishment of God’s eternal kingdom.

The Minor Prophets

The Minor Prophets: Messengers of Hope and Judgment.

The Minor Prophets are a collection of twelve books in the Old Testament, so named for their shorter length, not for their lesser importance. They deliver messages of both impending judgment and future hope to the people of Israel and Judah. Hosea and Amos warn the northern kingdom of Israel about their idolatry and social injustice. Jonah and Nahum deal with the city of Nineveh, while Obadiah and Joel address specific nations and events. Micah prophesies about both judgment and restoration for Judah and Jerusalem. Habakkuk questions God about His use of wicked nations to punish His own people, and Zephaniah warns of the coming “Day of the Lord.” The post-exilic prophets, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi, encourage the returned exiles to rebuild the Temple, address their spiritual apathy, and look toward the coming Messiah.

The Gospels

The Gospels: The Life of Christ.

The Gospels are the four books of the New Testament that tell the story of Jesus Christ’s life, ministry, death, and resurrection. Matthew presents Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah and King, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies and emphasizing His teachings. Mark is a fast-paced, action-oriented account that portrays Jesus as the suffering servant and highlights His miracles and authority. Luke is a detailed and comprehensive narrative that focuses on Jesus’ humanity and His compassion for the poor and marginalized. John offers a more theological and reflective account, presenting Jesus as the divine Son of God and exploring themes of eternal life, light, and love.

The “Prison Epistles”—Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians—were written while Paul was in prison, focusing on the unity of the church, the joy of Christ, and the supremacy of Christ over all things. The letters to the Thessalonians (First and Second Thessalonians) provide encouragement and address questions about the second coming of Christ. The “Pastoral Epistles” (First and Second Timothy and Titus) contain instructions for church leaders on sound doctrine and proper conduct.
